The GVO typically hosts over 1300 visitors annually from the Gunnison Valley, around Colorado, across the United States and around the world, 4th grade students from Gunnison Elementary School, Cub Scouts, Lake City Middle and High School students, many Western Colorado University (WCU) astronomy students, and many more astronomy enthusiasts. We provide educational and entertaining lectures and programs, as well as viewing through the dome-housed 30” telescope and a variety of other smaller scopes. Any contribution helps further our programming!

If you are interested in being a volunteer at the Gunnison Valley Observatory, please download our Volunteer Information Packet.

Each viewing season, we need these typical staff volunteers for each open public night: a facility coordinator, two greeters, a speaker, a dome presenter and scope operator, and two or three individuals to help operate the smaller outside scopes and interact with the public about what they are viewing. Not all volunteer positions require an in-depth knowledge of astronomy, just a willingness to learn and enjoy the night sky with our visitors.
